The Team

AV
Andrew and Andrea Vertigan

Andrew was a bricklayer before becoming a Salvation Army officer, and Andrea worked in a sales office, planning office and as a legal secretary.
We have 3 children Aaron, Nathan and Esther.
Andrea has a personal desire for people to really grow in their faith, and has a passion for prayer and creative, interactive, multi-sensory teaching.

We entered the Salvation Army training college in London to train as Salvation Army officers in 1988 and commissioned in 1990, and were appointed to Gawthorpe Corps in Yorkshire. It was there that God called and directed us to start The Salvation Army in Wetherby, which we started in 1993, We love being part of the community in Wetherby.

Andrew is also a rugby union fanatic and having played for several years at a high level has for the last 10 years been refereeing and is in fact on the national list of top 50 referees in the country. This has enabled him to referee at Twickenham, as well as in Belgium, Holland and Capetown South Africa.

Sarah Tomkinson

Corps Assisstant
alongside
Youth Work Manager

In the summer I graduated with a JNC and BA HONS in Youth and Community work with Applied Theology from The Centre of Youth Ministry. That sentence still makes me laugh, I never thought I would even go to university.   My new role is split between Tadcaster Salvation Army and Wetherby. I have responsibility for leadership of Tadcaster and at Wetherby I have responsibility of managing the children’s and youth workers as well as overseeing the youth work programme. Both of my roles involve the admin side to a church as well.   This role is a new challenge for me and I am learning lots in all kinds of areas. I feel very humbled and privileged to be able to be in some of the situations I have found myself in.

this is God’s time!"

Jo and Glen Wallace

Family and Community Workers

All Mums, Dads and children need help from time to time.
Most are able to turn to family, friends, neighbours or Church and the problem is shared and solved, but for some a little extra help is needed.
A listening ear, impartial advice, or in some cases put in touch with professional agencies.
We hope to see families find solutions to their problems, help them access outside help, build up loving relationships, and to see God working in their lives.
To offer that extra help fuels our own passion of helping families empower themselves to create a better future, and have fun together.

We are really looking forward to joining the team here at the Salvation Army in Wetherby, and working alongside the staff of Wetherby High and the wider community, and of course meeting and chatting with families.

In all these things we have full victory through God who showed his love for us
Romans 8:37

Harriet Ovenden

Family Outreach Worker

I am Harriet Ovenden and have just joined a great team of people focused on young people and children. For this new position, as a Family Outreach Worker, I operate out of the inclusion building at the Salvation Army and day to day I work out and about with the children, parents and staff of 17 Primary Schools.
I was a teaching assistant and then more recently qualified as a teacher. This job may be a departure from a teaching path but God knows what He is doing and will use elements of my previous job, children and schools, to His good effect.

I love knitting, hosting housefuls of friends and family, would love to read more if I could remember what words say and I know the real shape of a raindrop!

Claire Spivey

Children & Youth worker

Im Claire the new Children and Youth worker at Wetherby Salvation Army. I will be working with Livewires on a Wednessday, Captiv8 on a Sunday and helping out in Encapture and Sanctuary. I also will be involved with St James school providing support where its needed.   I have attended Leeds Central Salvation Army and have been activitly involved there with their Childrens and Youth work. My previous childrens work has involved me being a teaching assistant and a play leader but I felt God calling me to childrens ministry. I am also a Universtiy student studying Childrens Ministry and mission.   I enjoy this course as it challenges me on my childrens work but also gives me resources to improve my skills. I feel that God wants me to be at Wetherby and Luke 4:18 " The spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor" has spoken to me alot since been offered the job.

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Jane Rayner

School Inclusion Worker

I passionately believe that ALL young people deserve to be valued, cared for & given the same opportunities. I have been a member of Wetherby Community Church for 12 years and have been involved in these projects as a volunteer since they began.   For the past 9 years I have worked as a Learning Support Assistant at Wetherby High School & I’m Mum to 3 Teenagers.
I believe God has brought me to my new role & feel He will use all of this experience.
In all of my work I will seek to make time for young people & hope that, with God’s help, I will be able to make a difference in their lives. I love making jewellery and I carry a metal detector in my handbag!

I am the Essential 2 student here at Wetherby. Essential 2 is a training programme with different streams there is only one way on to this programme and it is through the Essential 1 gap year, which I did last year.   So being on Essential 2 gives me the opportunity to study but also do what I love doing which is youth work. I am doing a degree at CYM to become a youth worker whilst Wetherby is my placement.   My main role is Friday Night Sanctuary, this is a youth club which gives young people a safe place to come and be themselves with their friends. I am also involved in the schools parts of our youth programme in Wetherby.
